NEWCASTLE physician and pioneering cardiologist Noel Walker has died, aged 88.
Dr Walker began his career as a general practitioner in Stockton while studying to be a heart specialist.He worked at one of the state's first coronary care units, at Royal Newcastle Hospital, and was a physician at the Mater Hospital.In the 1980s he helped in the planning for John Hunter Hospital.Friend and colleague Bruce Bastian said Dr Walker was a great man and a highly respected member of the medical community. "He was totally devoted to his family and the hospital system," he said.Dr Bastian said his friend was at the forefront of cardiology.Dr Walker died of complications from vascular disease. He is survived by his wife Cath and daughters Anne, Julie and Maria.
