NSW yesterday got off to the worst possible start in their bid to chase down Western Australia's 88-run first-innings lead when opener Phillip Hughes was dismissed for a four-ball duck at the WACA Ground.

The Blues were 1-36 in the final session on the second day, with Greg Mail (10) and Peter Forrest (24) the not out batsmen. NSW were fortunate, however, that the Warriors top order failed to press home their advantage fully. The home team's top eight batsmen all reached double figures but none were able to capitalise as they were bowled out for 265.

Paceman Grant Lambert (5-82) claimed his maiden first-class five-wicket haul, while Nathan Bracken bowled well and deserved a better return than his 2-48.

Wrist spinner Beau Casson bowled just five overs in a wayward display before leaving the field after lunch with a niggling leg injury.
